There is a lot of buzz around self-care and most people know that they should be doing it, but don't know how to fit it into their daily routine. With the stress of work, school, and family life, it's hard to find time for ourselves. This blog will include tips on how to find self-care in your daily routine. This means that you'll be able to maintain your health even when you have a million and one things to do.
What is self-care and why is it important?
Self-care is the practice of taking care of yourself, both physically, emotionally, and mentally. It includes things like eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and managing stress in positive ways. Everyone's self-care needs are different, and it's important to find what works for you.
Some days will be harder than others to squeeze in even just one of these things. But, when you take care of yourself, you're better able to take care of others and meet the demands of daily life. Once you’re able to build some of these self-care practices into your routine, it will become second nature and you won’t even have to plan time out, you’ll just do it.
How I like to practice self-care:
Some of my favorite ways to practice self-care are going on daily walks, meditation/prayer, drinking lots of water throughout the day, taking a bath, doing my skincare routine, reading, and eating whole foods. None of these things are super time-consuming or require a lot of effort, but they can have a huge impact on your overall well-being.
For example, when at work or working from home I always make sure I get in an afternoon walk. This allows me to 1) get some vitamin D and 2) provide that break that I need to be able to come back to work feeling reenergized and more focused. You’ll find that most self-care practices have a domino effect. I like to pray and meditate before bed because it helps me sleep better, therefore setting me up to have a more successful day.
So what are ways that you can build self-care into your daily routine?
First off, you need to find what simple things bring you joy.
- Do you love plants? Taking the time to water your plants every day can be an act of self-care.
- Do you love your dog? Instead of going for a solo walk, take your cute dog for a walk.
- Do you enjoy reading? Make it a habit to read every night before bed instead of scrolling through your phone.
- Do you enjoy cooking or baking? Next time you are in the kitchen, turn on some music and shut the rest of the world out.
Once you know your favorite ways to practice self-care, you can start prioritizing them in your everyday routine. To start, you could set a reminder for yourself on your phone or write on a sticky note and put it on your workstation. These small acts of self-care can help set your health up for success.
Taking care of ourselves is not self-indulgent, it's self-preservation.
This is how living a healthy lifestyle begins. You don't have to change everything all at once. Start small and go from there. Soon, you will be supporting your physical, mental, and emotional health more organically!
