It's so common to have aches, pains, intense emotions, etc. come up in our everyday lives and we just ignore them. We keep moving on with our day until those aches, pains, and/or emotions, get worse and worse. Until finally, we feel overwhelmed by them.
What do I do about this now? Do I need surgery? Do I need some kind of therapy?
If this is you, it's okay, we've all been there. But let's start changing the narrative of our stories and listen to our bodies.
Everything your body feels is a signal to you that you're a.) doing the right things or b.) something is off and it needs to be addressed.
Don't suppress these signals!
Your body is your home. Think of it like that. If your roof was caving in and leaking, you wouldn't just ignore it, you would fix it. That's how we should treat our bodies too.
Nobody wants to feel like a stranger in their own home. Don't let yourself feel like a stranger in your own body either.
So how can you feel more connected to your body? How can you feel comfortable in your body?
#1 Be Okay with Being Alone
Be able to just sit with yourself. By this I mean no distractions (yes, no phones) and just get comfortable being in your own presence. I know this may sound weird, but it really is so helpful. This could be meditation, journaling your feelings, or simply just deep breathing.
Slowing down and sitting in your presence can help you to feel more connected to your body. When you’re constantly go, go, go, it’s easier to ignore those signs and symptoms.
#2 Love Your Body
Loving the body that God gave you is also an important aspect. Why? Because you love your home, so you take care of it, right? You cherish it. You love how cozy your couch is on a cold winter night. You love snuggling up in bed after a long day.
1 Corinthians 16:14 says, “Do everything in love.”
Everything we do, should come from a loving place. Even if you don’t love how you look or your body is doing things that you don’t understand.
I can relate. While going through my own journey with mold toxicity there have been so many times where I have felt frustrated with how my body has reacted to certain treatments (especially because the treatments should be helping me).
But our bodies are amazing. They were created to work in miraculous ways. If one thing in your body is off, somewhere else will overcompensate to keep it balanced.
Even through these hard times we still need to accept our bodies with love because they are reacting to protect us, not to hurt us.
#3 Be Okay with Change
When the roof on your house is caving in, you know you need to fix it. What if the roof that you’ve had for so long is not available anymore? To make sure it doesn’t happen again, you may need a different type of roof.
When dealing with symptoms in our bodies it could be signaling to us that we need to stop what we’ve been doing and try something new.
Change can be scary and hard but it can also come with so much growth and healing!
If you’re feeling like a stranger in your body, then let’s change that! Tune in to what your body is trying to tell you. Don’t suppress your aches, pains, or emotions!
If you know what you need to do to fix your leaky roof, now is the time to do it! Baby steps are all it takes.
